Digitally-Based Conversations

Connecting via email and online video/audio call might seem odd when you see your students daily, but the different platform might prove more comfortable for some of your students. While there are many tech tools and social networking platforms available to connect online, consider the following tips as you seek to digitally connect with your students:

  • Share your email address and call preferences (Skype, Google Hangouts, etc.)

  • Inform your students that they can reach out to you at any point of time

  • Try to respond promptly to students' emails; it may have been a big step for them to send it.

  • If a student wishes to call or video chat, agree upon a suitable time to talk. You can also consider committing a fixed time every day for students to connect with you online.

  • If you are aware of students who have an online presence (for example, some students may write their own blogs or articles), consider following them or commenting on suitable posts. This may boost their confidence and also build their trust in you. Be mindful, however, that some students may not be comfortable with that nature of interaction.
