  1. For students who opt for verbal presentations, provide guidelines around the presentation such as time, use of resources, etc.

  2. Create a physical space in the classroom so that students can be seen by their classmates when presenting.

  3. Depending on the requirements of each presentation, arrange for other materials such as a whiteboard, projector and screen, markers, a computer, etc.

  4. Set a timer so that students are aware of their pacing through the presentation.

  5. Set a buffer time to accommodate any technical problems that may come up during the presentations.

Carol, a ninth grade science teacher, allows students to choose verbal presentations as an alternative to writing a final paper. To ensure parity, she provides guidelines around the content that needs to be covered in the written and verbal presentations to ensure that the students have understood the core concepts. She also lets them know how much time each presentation should take. Students can sign up for a verbal presentation two weeks in advance of the final class.

One week before class, Carol asks students to share their presentation plan in terms of the resources that they would need for their presentation. Before the final class, Carol makes arrangements to ensure that all the resources are in place. She also rearranges the classroom so that everyone will be able to see the presenter and his/her presentation.

After all the presentations are over, she congratulates the students, summarizes the key learning points, and answers any questions that the students may have.
